Golden Retriever Food Aggression
How to explain our puppies behaviour?
My hubby, his parents, I live together in a house. In-laws owned a golden retriever, passed away a year ago. My hubby decided to buy a new dog for them, since they wanted one. About 3 months ago we bought a 3 months old golden retriever girl for them, named Nike’. Lately the in-laws complain Nike’ is growling/snapping at them when they come close to her food/toys/bones. My hubby and I were surprised. We never saw it. So we walked up Nike’ while she was chewing on her bone and both of us were able to take the bone straight out of her mouth. No fuss. We did realize she comes very often into our bedroom to hide her toys and bones. She shows no aggression towards my husband and I. The in-laws are mad about it. They say “we treat their dog differently”. We barely see Nike’ cause they are trying to have her full attention. A few hrs ago they told us they’d prefer if my hubby and I wouldnt spend time with Nike’ at all. I dont know what to do? Why is Nike’ treating us differently? Any ideas?
It sounds like Nike is spoiled and has her humans (the in-laws) wrapped around her little paws and considers them her servents. It sounds like she respects you and you haven’t endulged her, maybe you treat her like a dog? I think your in-laws are jealous and think Nike likes you guys better. I also think they need to take her to obedience class before they end up with a little, no, make that big, terror.
