my dog is vomiting every time he drinks water?

my 1 year old golden retriever is sick and vomiting even when he drinks water he hasn’t eaten anything in the past 24 I called the vet they said to hold everything for 12 hours then start giving him water in small amounts am I just over reacting and is it just a flu kind of thing
Thank you all for your thoughts, I did take him to the vet about an hour after posting this and he had a blockage in his intestinal track from eating or should I say sneaking water bottles and their wrappers some of the plastic got caught and he ended up with a 4 hour surgery and we are now hoping and praying for a speedy recovery. So note to all please keep all plastic water bottles away from your dogs isn’t worth their enjoyment.

Throwing up water can be a very clear indication that something is wrong.
First, your pup is probably on his way to dehydration, not good!
Secondly, when my Yorkie Chi was throwing up water, I took him to the vet only to discover he had a huge mass in his stomach. After surgery they removed the whole mini potato he had eaten and that was rotting his belly.

I think you need to see another vet asap. Vomiting water is not a good sign.
