Do labrador retrievers ever stop chewing?
I have a nine month old lab with a major chewing problem. I don’t work and am generally home most of the day, maybe an occasional outing here and there…but thats it! Everytime I leave he destroys something! Tonight I went to a Christmas dinner and came home and my entire christmas tree was torn to shreds and every ornament broken or missing. My boyfriend is so mad that he threatens to give him away if I can’t fix the problem. The dog has plenty of toys and treats, we also have another dog (a cockapoo) they play together all the time…I am so frustrated…what can i do?
Chewing seems to be at its worst around 9 months old, at least in my experience. Your dog is too young to have free run of the house when you are gone and that is the problem, not the dog. Young dogs are like human toddlers, they lack the ability to behave themselves without supervision. You need to invest in a crate for your dog and put the dog in there when you are gone. I assure you that the dog will be just fine, especially if you are only gone for short periods of time, but what it teaches the dog is that when you are away they are supposed to just rest or chew on appropriate items, like their chew toys.

Dogs do eventually grow out of the chewing everything phase, but they need guidance to get there and crate training is the best way to do that.

Added: I just had to add that I am APPALLED by most of the answers you have gotten so far. Wow, all the knowledgeable people must be asleep. Wow. Seriously, try crate training. I have been able to train many, many dogs with nearly nothing being destroyed and they all love their crates.
I don’t recommend leaving a young dog outside while you are gone because there are too many ways for a dog to hurt themselves while outside unless you have a dog-proof enclosure, but if you had that you wouldn’t be having this problem. Crating is much safer.
