Four-legged friend for my beagle?

I am thinking of getting my beagle puppy a canine friend in the future. This probably won’t be for at least 6 months. I am currently studying for a bachelor degree through distance education (and am therefore home all day), and my beagle isn’t lonely. But in 2 years time I will be working full time and will have to leave my beagle at home alone all day (which the breed does not enjoy).

I have no intensions of breeding them – my beagle will be getting fixed up when he is 5 months old (he’s 3 months old now). I was thinking of a golden retriever or a dog similar in size and in nature, but am still researching..

So my question is this:

What kind of dog should I get to accompany my beagle?
Does any one else own a beagle and another breed of dog?

You can take your dog to a shelter and let him pick his own buddy.

When he’s completely vaccinated and fixed, call over to the shelter and let them know you’re coming. They’ll put you and your doggie in a “family room” or a yard and bring dogs for a “meet and greet”.

This way, you know they get along from day one and don’t have to face some hard decisions if they suddenly decide they can’t stand each other.

It’s not so much breed as individual personalities.
Some mesh and some don’t.

Good luck.
