Chocolate Lab Ears
Posted in Retriever Dogs on by adminWhy is my dog’s ear wrinkled?
I have a chocolate lab. We are going through a heat wave right now. He has acess to shade and a pool and lots of water. Yesterday, I noticed that one of his ears looks wrinkled up, like “crinkled”. Almost like he slept on it strange or something, but it is still like that today. We have another dog, a 200 pound mastiff. They play together and sometimes, someone will get bitten or scratched. Anyone have any idea what is going on with his ear? It does not appear to be sore or tender.
I have looked on a website that says if a dog gets a hematoma that goes untreated, there can be a permanent wrinkle. It said hematomas can happen when a dog shakes it’s head too hard and hits something. I am guessing this is what happened to him.
What the above post suggests is that it is a hematoma. Most vets in my area drain them as they could get infected. It can happen when your dog scratches it. Sometimes having your dogs nails filed, especially the back ones they use to scratch may help prevent this in the future. I have also seen a wrinkled , elephant looking skin on the inside of the ear that is commonly associated w/ infections and allergies, often food allergies. I particularly see that a lot in labs b/c they have flapped ears and seem prone to ear infections.
Heres a site about it.
