What’s the difference between male and female yellow lab cichlids?
Hi. I want to get some bright bold fish and i like the look of yellow lab cichlids. It would also be quite cool if they bred so how can you tell the male and females apart?
Thanks
Can someone include some images? Or maybe go into depth about their size, colours, behaviour?
Labidochromis Caereleus
I have found that males tend, that is key tend, to be bigger in overall size, more deeper black in both the dorsal and pectoral fins. This doesn’t hold true in all cases however. The only fool proof method here is venting. I shouldn’t say foolproof, but provided you know what you are looking for, it’s accurate. The thing about venting though, it takes time, as in you have to let the fish grow and get big enough to vent. You can’t take fry and vent them, they are just too small.
If you think about it though, sometimes you don’t really need to vent them. For example, if you have a group of six you just bought, or let’s say also, you have a spawn of them like 30, since you need for them to grow to get an accurate venting of them, many times you can find males visually without having to do it. In a small or even large group of the same species all the same age, over the course of a month or so, you should spot a few here and there that are growing out much faster then the others, are more active and assertive then the others, and usually grabbing a high amount of food long before other fish get any. These are strong indicators that you have a male. It’s not 100% accurate, but probably 3 out of every 4 times it holds true. At about 1.5 – 2 inches in size, you could try venting.
Basically in the venting, you will see the anal opening, and just above that, you will see a pour, and the size of the pour indicates the sex. A small vent is a male, a larger vent is a female.
I co-wrote up an article about this on
